ZitatThe Story of Star Trek: Axanar
"Axanar” takes place 21 years before the events of “Where no Man Has Gone Before”, the first Kirk episode of the original Star Trek. Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero. Kirk himself called Garth the model for all future Starfleet Officer’s. Garth charted more planets than any other Captain and was the hero of the Battle of Axanar, the story of which is required reading at the academy. This is that story.
“Axanar” tells the story of Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart. Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time.
It is the year 2245, four years into the war with the Klingons.

We only follow Canon, which, according to CBS (And Memory Alpha) , means anything onscreen. So books, tech manuals, all of that is not canon. Now, we all know some of that stuff is better than some of the stuff onscreen! But you have to draw a line, and all the licensed books and comics and such can be contradictory. And besides, Garth has different stories. In the FASA books he commanded The Xenophon. In Star Trek: New Frontier, he commanded the Exaclibur. In the novel "Garth of Izar" he commanded the Heisenberg. Now it pisses me off that there is so much contradictory stuff, that no one honors what came before. But since that is the case, we choose WHAT to honor.
That is why Axanar takes place in the last year of the Four Years War. That is an homage to FASA. But that is about all you will find us taking from the books. The rest is based on the facts we know about Garth in "Whom Gods Destroy".
What are those facts?
1) His exploits were required reading at Starfleet Academy
2) He is one of Kirk's heroes
3) Kirk's first visit to Axanar was a new fledge cadet on a Peace Mission.
4) The Peace Mission was instrumental in the Federation (Kirk alludes to it creating the Federation, but this has been retconned out, so we make it a key event in SAVING the Federation).
5) Garth was Fleet Captain and according to Kirk, the best of them all.
6) Garth was the finest student at the academy
7) Garth was the role model for Starfleet captains.
So that is what we extrapolate from. Those are the facts from Canon that are about Garth. We ignore the books and create our own mythology. One that we hope will be readily accepted by fans as it will be fresh and new and thoughtful.
And teh picture of the Kelvin is because the Kelvin IS canon in the Prime Universe. Anything before the Narada shows up is in fact, official canon according to CBS.
